Dry Shampoo Comparison

Hi guys! Liz here! There aren’t many beauty products that I can say have changed my life. But dry shampoo is one that definitely makes the list.

Once you become a mom, you are just kidding yourself if you think you will have time to wash and style your hair every day. If you are a mom that is actually able to do this, then you really are a supermom!! For me, I can make time 2 days a week to wash and style my hair- please don’t judge!

I luckily have thick and wavy hair that doesn’t get too oily. But my secret to making it the 3 days in between washes, is dry shampoo!

I tested the below products over the course of 3 days to see what the pros and cons are of each, and which is my new favorite! Commission links are provided to check out the products for yourself!

How to use dry shampoo: It is very simple to apply dry shampoo. I typically use it in the morning on dry hair before I do any other styling. I first bend at the waist and tip my head over and apply some of the shampoo at the base hairline and at the hairline behind my ears (where I get more oily). I use by finger tips and rub the shampoo in- almost like when you are rubbing true shampoo into your scalp. I flip my head back up and then apply it to the roots on the top of my head. I do this by lifting sections of my hair and applying some shampoo on the scalp. I make sure I don’t put any in the section of my hair where my part shows since I don’t want any shampoo to be seen. I then use my fingers tips again to rub in the shampoo all over my scalp. Then I style as normal using my flat iron, curling iron/wand etc.  You can also re-apply it if you need a pick me up later in the day or if you are re-styling your hair again at night before going out.

Product #1- Verb Dry Shampoo

  • White fine powder with a very light scent
  • Very easy to use applicator- Pointed to allow for precise placement and controls how much product is released so you don’t overuse the powder
  • Very easy to blend into your scalp so the powder is not noticeable
  • Increases volume, doesn’t weight down the hair, and no residual product left on the hair
  • Scalp feels great after applying- soaks up the oil and scalp feels refreshed and not itchy
  • Bottle lasts a long time- have used for a couple of months and am only halfway through the bottle
  • Great price- very affordable compared to most dry shampoo products on the market

Here are before and after pictures using the Verb product. You can see the difference in the volume, especially at the roots.

Product #2 – Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo

  • This item is a spray with a translucent powder. It was the only spray I tested. I was nervous as I had only used powders before. But I ended up loving it!
  • Easy to apply. Pointed the nozzle to the section of scalp I wanted to apply to and pressed down. Was easy to control the amount of product by doing short sprays.
  • For a few seconds your scalp will feel wet. But that does not last and does not ruin your hair texture or styling. It felt very cooling and soaked in well.
  • Increases volume, doesn’t weight down the hair, and no residual product left on the hair
  • Scalp felt great after applying- soaks up the oil and scalp feels refreshed and not wet. I wasn’t sure if I would love the spray since I was nervous of the product being wet at first. But it dries fast and feels great on the scalp and hair!
  • Similar to the powders, it is very easy to blend into your scalp using your fingertips.
  • Only cons are:
    • I’m not sure how long the bottle will last. I’ve used for a few months and it feels more empty than the powder bottles I have after using for the same amount of time
    • Higher price than the other options I tried. Love the product, but not sure if it’s worth the extra cost.

Here are before and after pictures using the Oribe product.

Product #3 – Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder

  • White fine powder with a light scent
  • This product was a little more difficult to apply vs the Verb. It was more difficult to control how much product is released. I still applied directly on the scalp but lightly shook the bottle vs squeezing it so only a small amount of product was released. Then if I needed more, I would repeat that step.
  • Very easy to blend into your scalp so the powder is not noticeable
  • Increases volume, doesn’t weight down the hair. Is a little more coarser on the hair compared to the Verb product above.
  • Soaks up all the oil and the scalp feel refreshed
  • Middle of the road price point. Expecting bottle to last awhile like the Verb powder has.
  • Only con is that this product added more texture and coarseness to my hair that is already thick and coarse. It may be better suited for hair that is thinner and softer since it would provide the right amount of volume and texture.

Here are before and after pictures using the Bumble and Bumble product. This is the product with the most obvious change in volume, especially by the roots!

Left: Before Right: After

So now that I’ve gone through all the details, I can reveal my new favorite dry shampoo…..

And the winner is……VERB! For me, this product was the overall winner. It worked great on my hair and left both my scalp and hair feeling refreshed and clean. The price is very affordable! And you don’t have to use much of the product, so I think it will last a long time.

I hope you find this product review helpful!! I highly recommend trying a dry shampoo. It’s been a lifesaver for me.

GAME CHANGER

Ok Ladies! I was just introduced to this product last week and it immediately became my favorite new skincare item!! I know I just posted about my skincare regimen last week, but there needs to be a amendment!!! If you suffer from under eye bags and dark circles, like me, this is the game changer!! Dr. Brandt’s No More Baggage.

I have to tell you upon the first time I used this the bags under my eyes were literally gone!! You use a very small amount (the size of 1/2 a pea), rub between your fingers to warm up and dab it under the eye. You will feel the skin tightening up. That feeling does not stay, but the results do.

You use it after you apply your eye cream or moisturizer. You can also reapply as needed later in the day, I have not had to do that.

Click here if you would like to give this a try!! GAME CHANGER!!! (this is the best deal as of today)

Skincare Regimen

Hi Colleen here!

I have always been a skincare junkie. Always trying new and different products since I was in my 20’s. Now that I am in my 40’s (ok, full disclosure, I am 47), I find It even more important to really find the products that work for my concerns. My biggest concerns are to fight the fine lines that are trying so hard to show themselves and trying to keep my skin moisturized. Oh, and then trying to not look soooooo tired all the time!

I have recently come full circle with my daily skincare products. The main product line I am using now I first used in my 20’s when I started to really take care of my skin. (BTW, you are never too young or too old to start taking care of your skin).

So, here are the products I am using currently in my fight against aging! The Philosophy brand is my go to. I love how my skin looks and feels after, as well as the scents they use. The scents make you feel like you are in a spa!

My Step 1: Cleanse with Purity by Philosophy

IThis image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is step-1-1-1.jpg If said that I wash my face every night, that would not be the truth, but I do most nights. There are those nights I am way too tired to do much of anything let alone go through my skin care route….

Purity is a very gentle cleanser with an amazing scent. You use a very small amount and with a drop of water message all over your face and neck. It will not foam up, but will melt away the make up (as they say). Then rinse.

Here is the link to the 32 oz bottle I use, it literally lasts at least 6 months! This is the best deal I could find on this size as of today.

My Step 2: Apply Serum with When Hope Is Not Enough by Philosophy (I swear that’s the name). The tag line I love “May we grow beautiful as we grow wise”

All of these products have these inspirational quotes that help you get your mornings going.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is step-2-1-1.jpg

This serum is a bit heavier than another have used but it leaves your skin feeling so smooth. They recommend you use 4-5 drops, but I find you only need 3 drops and apply all over your face and neck. It is so important to treat your neck, especially as we get older, within every step of your routine.

This step tends to be a bit of a slurge but here is the best deal I could find on the 4 oz bottle and the 1oz bottle. Honestly, as long as you use a really good moisturizer you can probably skip this step.

My Step 3: apply Moisturizer with Renewed Hope In A Jar

“Live with optimism, renew with hope”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is step-3-1.jpg

I only use a very small amount with this as well (see pic above) and apply all over face and neck. This moisturizer is not greasy in any way, simply absorbs right into the skin. Your skin will look refreshed, rosy, and youthful, I swear. I love love this stuff!

Currently best deal on 4 oz jar and 2 oz jar. Please note that the 4 oz jar will last about 6 months.

My Step 4: Finally apply Eye Cream with Dew It All by Farmacy

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is mobile-image-69-1.jpg

SUPER important for me! This is where I am seeing those pesky lines the most! This product was introduced to me through the FabFitFun box (will show you all in an up coming blog) for fall. I love it. Not greasy and just absorbs right into the skin. Again, just a small amount and dab around your eyes, all around. Don’t not rub, just dab.

It is a small jar at only 0.5 oz but you use so little that it last a few months.  Best deal here!

Items I use only once a week:

1st: Renewed Hope In A Jar Peeling Mousse

This product is recommended to use 2-3 times per week, but I only use it once per week. After you cleanse, you squeeze out the product the size of a quarter and message all over face and neck. Please avoid your eyes! It will start to roll off all the dead skin cells and cleans out your pours. This is amazing or gross (see pic). Continue this process for about 1 minute and then rinse. You skin will be refreshed and ready to receive moisturizer. This is my favorite step of the week!

The 2.5 oz tube is linked here. You will be amazed by what comes off your face!

2nd: Blaq Eye Mask

Though these look and feel slimy they are AMAZING! I use them as needed when I have major dark circles and puffiness around my eyes. You put them on each eye for about 10-15 minutes. Remove. And rinse. I use them in the morning, but you can use them whenever you need it.

The pack of 5 sets is linked here!

Like I have said before, what works me may not work for you. Plus you may only want to try one of the steps, which is totally fine. Everyone is different and has different needs for their skin. But what I do know is that it is very important to do something to care for your skin and it is never too early. Plus it’s fun to try all the different products out there!

Oh!  Let me introduce you to my amateur photographer!  Both makeup free!!

Good luck!!

Josie Maran Skincare

I don’t know about you guys but as soon as the air gets colder and heat is turned on in the house my skin turns super dry. I have tried so many different moisturizers and didn’t like the greasy feel of most or the nothing feel of others. It wasn’t until I took a leap of faith and tried the Josie Maran Body Butter and Hand cream that I found products that work. These products, as with all of Josie Moran’s products, contain argan oil.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Josie-Maran.jpg

The Body Butter and Hand Cream are not greasy and melt into your skin leaving your skin feeling silky smooth. A huge benefit is that you can use these items on more than just your hands and body. I use them on my cuticles, face, and if any excess on my hands I rub through my hair. I have also used the hand cream on my lips when they are chapped and it cured them in a day!

I stick to the unscented because I can’t take many scents, but they do come in other scents. I do know that even the scented products are very light and the actual scent is supposed to go any as the product melts into your skin. They make it known that this will not substitute for your fragrance.

The Body Butter: I have pictured the 13.5oz size, which I just received.  I had the 8oz size and it lasted me just about all year!  A little goes a long way with this stuff!

2 13.5oz special price on QVC  This is 2 13.5oz tubs for $69.36, which is 34.68 per tub.  Huge deal because 1 8oz tub is normally $35.00!  In this deal you will receive 1 unscented and 1 scented.  I think this is a nice way to try one of her scents for the first time.

4 4oz tub special price on QVC  This also a great deal to try this product for the first time as it includes 4 4oz tubs for $39.94.  So again, keep in mind that 1 8oz tub normally retails for $35.00.  And you get 1 unscented and 3 different scents to try out.

The Intensive Hand Cream:  I have it pictured here in a 4.6oz tube.  Please note that this tube has also lasted me all year and I use it several times per day.  Again, a little goes a long way.  This item is generally hard to find alone on its own.  It is mostly added to sets, but I was able to find it alone on Josie Maran website.

Whipped Agran Oil Intensive Hand Cream  Note that I like to use the unscented but I could only find scented at this time.  But like I said before the scents are very light and fade away as the product melts into your skin. Check them out!  The 4.6 oz retails for $40.00, but please keep in mind that this size has lasted me all year!  So for me was worth the splurge!  There is also a 2.37oz tube on her site right now retailing for $22.00.

I hope you enjoy these products as much as I do!! Here’s to fighting dry skin all winter long!! Cheers!!

Finding My New Makeup Routine

Makeup over 40

Getting older is not easy.  The aches and pains, struggle with staying in shape, and changes with my skin.  I noticed my face becoming more combination skin than it had ever been and all my fine lines becoming more defined.  I realized that my everyday makeup and skin care routine was just not working anymore.  So, I set out to try new brands and products.  After spending a ton of money on foundations (that I never had to wear before), powders, mascaras (mine old one all of a sudden started to run on my under eyes), eyebrow pencils (never had to use before), moisturizers, anti-aging creams, and finally eye creams…….. I finally found the perfect products for me.

IT Cosmetics!

First of all it is important to mention that most of IT cosmetics contain an SPF of 50 and all contain anti-aging ingredients.

I struggle with wearing a foundation.  I hate the feeling of anything on my face and I never had to wear a foundation prior to turning 40 something…  I absolutely love their Bye Bye Foundation Full Coverage Moisturizer with SPF 50.  It is so light on my skin and a very little goes a long way, so my skin looks like my skin and not covered in heavy makeup.

it foundation

Next, I had to find a powder.  You actually do not need a powder with the Bye Bye Foundation as it dries matte, but I just like to set everything with a powder.  I found Bye Bye Pores Pressed Anti- Aging Finishing Powder.  LOVE IT!  The color is translucent so it does not layer more color on your face and just softens the look of your foundation.   I pair it with the Bye Bye Pores Blush and combined they make my skin look and feel so soft.  And my pores disappear!

Now, for my mascara problem.  The mascara I had been using since I was in my teens (literally) started to flake and run.  It looked terrible!  I guess my eyelids and lashes are more oily.  Since I had so much luck with the other IT products I had tried I decided to give the Superhero Mascara a go.  Great purchase, love it more than my previous mascara!  It does not flake or run and makes my lashes full and so pretty.

mascara

Eyebrows…..  Where do they go after 40?  All of a sudden one day they were thinner than the day before and so on and so on….. This was new territory for me, as I have never had to use an eyebrow pencil before and was worried that they would look so unnatural.  Brow Power Super Skinny by IT is perfect for a beginner like me.  It comes in many colors to match back to your hair color.  The point is soooo skinny it is so easy to control and the color is so soft you can control how dark it goes on very easily.

eye pencil

Believe me I am very aware that makeup is a very personal thing and what works for me may not work for everyone.  I am just so excited to have found a product line that has helped me feel good about myself again and wanted to share with all of you.  If you are going through what I did, don’t give up and keep trying different lines of products.  There are so many out there that specialize in all kinds of skin issues.  GOOD LUCK!
